Deputy Ranking Member of the Education Committee of Parliament, Dr Clement Apaak has proposed that both the Education Minister and the CEO of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) be called before the House to answer questions on debt owed the National Food Suppliers Association.
His comment comes after some members of the Association picketed the premises of NAFCO on Tuesday, demanding that monies owned them for over two years be paid in full.
The suppliers who travelled from all regions across the country say the government owes them GH¢270 million for food supplied to Senior High Schools across the country from 2021 to 2023.
They say that until the government pays all of their money, they will remain on the NAFCO grounds.
However, NAFCO has not responded to the demands of the group.
On the back of this, the Builsa MP, who spoke to JoyNews said that “We are now getting different dimensions to an issue that we thought was much more straightforward.”
He further stated that the issue at hand "definitely requires an invitation to the Minister for Education and National Buffer Stock Food Company’s CEO to come to us, to explain to us exactly what is going on."
Dr Apak further disclosed that, per the information he has received, he could foresee the country experiencing challenges in supplying food to secondary school institutions across the country if nothing is done to address the issue.
Moreover, he stressed that it is high time President Akufo-Addo intercedes and ensures that the matter is resolved as soon as possible.
