Two partially blind pupils of Soda Domeabra Primary at Mame Krobo in Eastern Region risk dropping out of school because their mother is unable to afford medical glasses for them.

School authorities say the children, Isaiah Dankwa and Janet Nkansah, are academically good but their condition is making it difficult for them to learn.

Joy News’ Kwetey Nartey was at the school and reports that Isaiah and Janet have to lie on the bare floor close to the blackboard to enable them see from the board. This leaves their uniforms dirty always.

Both are partially blind and they have been living with the condition for ten years.

The siblings rely on each other for movement; without one it is difficult for the other to go to school or move around.

Their mother, Comfort Oforiwaa, 53 said when they were growing up she noticed that  anytime they crawled, they knocked their heads on objects in front of them.

Same was noticed when they started walking.

The widow said she later found out that there was a whitish stain on their pupils.

Isaiah’s class teacher Emmanuel Dipoh fears they might drop out of school due to their inability to see properly.

“Because he cannot see properly he cannot write what needs to written and at the end that means he will not be able to achieve what he has to.

“I realized that he has a potential. When you teach him, he will hear and recite whatever you said orally but to produce by writing is the biggest problem”, he said.

The children say they are aware of their condition but their mother says she cannot afford new medical glasses for them.

The time is due for their spectacles to be changed but because I can’t afford it, I haven’t been able to take them to the hospital for three years, she said.
