Passengers travelling from Kumasi aboard a 207 Benz bus with registration number GE 8142 X, en route to Enchi in the Western Region, last Monday night miraculously escaped unhurt when the bus they were travelling on caught fire.
With the exception of scratches some of the passengers sustained in their attempt to get out of the car, nobody was injured.
The incident occurred at Santasi on the Kumasi-Obuasi highway at about 9:00p.m when smoke started coming out from the engine of the bus.
But for the timely intervention of the people around and a nearby community communication centre which announced that the bus was on fire and called for assistance, a different story would have been told.
Some of the passengers who spoke to the Times said, soon after they took off from the Kejetia terminal, they could smell a burning scent from the bus but could not tell where it was coming from.
According to them it was when they got to Fankyenebra junction of the Santasi road that they realised a thick smoke was emanating from the engine.
This prompted the driver to stop as other road users brought out their fire extinguishers to help douse the fire.
The passengers were full of gratitude to God for saving them from what could have been a very catastrophic accident.
Ninety percent of the passengers were market women who ply their trades between Kumasi and Enchi.
