Hundreds of Asogli State natives and revelers participated in this year's New Yam Hailing Carnival through the principal streets of the Volta regional capital, Ho.

The Carnival locally called Teyuyru was led by traditional authorities was to usher in the new yam as their tradition demands.

The Carnival also signifies the lifting of the ban on the eating of new yam and as well as an occasion to congratulate farmers for their efforts during the farming season.

The dance and celebrations took off from the Ho Central Market, went through Bankoe, Dome, Hliha, Ahoe and ended at Heve for the final rites.

Rituals were performed and libations poured at shrines in all five traditional suburbs of Ho to thank the gods for a successful farming season, to ask for their protection and blessings for the next farming season.

Some elated patrons who shared their experiences with Joy News said, "it is a wonderful activity and I love the crowd and the enthusiasm attached to this carnival." 

"I came on a friend's visit and wasn't expecting to have this much fun. It is really a nice experience, am looking forward to next year's", Austin, a Canadian reveler said.

Emmanuel Nyamekye who once experienced the carnival also noted that "this is my second time and I think it's been awesome so far. Apparently, the festival just started so I am looking forward to more fun as it [festival] progresses."

"The organizers are doing well, I have participated in this festival year after year and things keep improving but I think they can do better. There was less publicity on this year's festival in particular and that should be corrected next year", Selorm, a resident stated.
