A taskforce from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, with support from the security services have demolished parts of Sodom and Gomorrah, Accra’s biggest slum area.

Bulldozers moved in Saturday afternoon to pull down structures which for years have served as homes for thousands of migrants mostly from the Northern Region.

The demolished structures caught fire suspected to have been started by some protesting slum dwellers.

The exercise was supervised by the Mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuye.
Residents could only watch as authorites pulled down the illegal dwellings believed to be another a monument of Ghanaian lawlessness.

Accra is reacting to a flooding and fire disaster on June 3. The disaster once again called into question, the enforcement of building regulations by city authorities.
With Ghana experiencing its rainy season, it is feared that more floods could futher destroy lives and properties.
