Today on JoyNews, The Law found out if the Police Service are permitted by law to arrest Members of Parliament.
This topic follows an attempt by the Police to arrest MP for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu for his involvement in a protest by his constituents on Monday, October 25.
During the demonstration against poor road network in the area, some Madina residents blocked parts of the road and set tyres ablaze.
As a result, the police apprehended some protesters and invited Mr Sosu for questioning but the MP argued that he had a parliamentary call to attend and could not be apprehended until the Speaker of Parliament is contacted.
Subsequently, the Madina MP filed a complaint of contempt of Parliament against two police officers to the Speaker of Parliament.
Following this, Speaker Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin referred the complaint of contempt of Parliament to the Privileges Committee.
Host, Samson Lardy Anyenini interacted with Lecturer at the Faculty of Law of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Maame Efua Addadzi-Koom and Head of Paintsil, Paintsil & Co., Kweku Paintsil to know whether the Police Service can arrest legislators.
