Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Bagbin has directed all Members of Parliament representing constituencies affected by the June 29 floods to return to their communities and actively participate in the National General Cleaning Days scheduled for Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11.
The directive follows President John Mahama's declaration of the two days as National General Cleaning Days in the seven regions affected by the recent floods.
Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, Speaker Bagbin announced that the House would suspend its sitting on Friday to enable MPs from the affected areas to lead clean-up activities alongside their constituents.
"In further demonstration of Parliament's commitment to this national undertaking, I'm inviting the leadership of the House, and I did that this morning, to an urgent consultation on the most appropriate institutional response by Parliament," he said.
"Among the matters we considered was whether it would be appropriate for the House not to sit on Friday, 10th July 2026, to enable honourable members from the affected regions to return to their constituencies and provide direct leadership in the clean-up exercise alongside their people."
"Definitely, it was a unanimous yes. And so, I direct that this House will not sit on Friday, 10th July 2026."
The National General Cleaning exercise is being organised under the auspices of the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee as part of efforts to restore sanitation in communities affected by the devastating floods and reduce the risk of future disasters.
The government has described the exercise as a critical intervention to protect lives, improve environmental sanitation, and strengthen flood prevention measures.
President Mahama has also directed all government appointees, including Ministers of State, Chief Executive Officers, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), as well as heads of public institutions, to leave their offices and personally lead clean-up activities within their respective jurisdictions.
The government has further urged all Ghanaians to actively participate in the exercise to help restore affected communities and prevent a recurrence of the flooding.
