Police Thursday morning stormed the offices of an Accra-based radio station, Top Radio, and whisked away two persons alleged to have made ‘criminal accusations’ against former President Jerry Rawlings.
The police who were acting on a tip-off from Kofi Adams, special aide to the former President, arrested two of the panelists; Nana Darkwa and George Best, who are said to be sympathizers of the opposition New Patriotic Party.
Both Kofi Adams and host of Top Radio morning show, Kwesi Fokuo Kudom, confirmed the incident. However efforts to reach the Accra Central Police where the suspects were said to have been sent to proved futile.
The suspects were to be arraigned before a circuit court at the Cocoa Affairs buildings on yet to be ascertained charges.
According to Kofi Adams, he personally asked the police to invite Nana Darkwa because of a definite statement he made on the burnt house, which he (Adams) felt could aid the police in their investigations.
“What I know is that the gentleman made a categorical statement that the former president burnt his house and dared me, his spokesperson, to come and challenge him, and that he is aware that the former president burnt his house,” he told Joy News' Matilda Asante Asiedu
Mr Adams confirmed he reported that Nana Darkwa made the allegation on-air and insisted that, that is the truth.
"But since I couldn’t challenge him and the best way to do is for the matter to be investigated, I brought in the appropriate institutions which is the police CID that is responsible for investigating those matters.”
Narrating the incident to Myjoyonline.com, Kwesi Fokuo Kudom, a.k.a. KK, said he was discussing the recent fire outbreaks at various state installations with three panelists, the two suspects and one other social commentator called Nana Poku.
He said the two shared their opinions on the issues and when it got to the turn of Mr Rawlings’ residence, they read various meanings into the cause of the fire, which one of them said he suspected foul play because the mood of the Rawlings' family did not show “any sign that they have lost something”.
He noted that at a point when their statement was becoming categorical and one dared Mr. Adams to challenge him, he (the host) ordered them to stop because they had no evidence.
K.K. said it was in the course of the programme that Kofi Adams came into the studio with an unknown person to have a tête-à-tête with him. Mr Adams and the companion left the studio but the friend returned with a camera taking pictures of the people, but was asked to stop, he said.
He said a few minutes later, police invaded the premises and took Nana Darkwa and George Best away.
