The swift intervention of some police personnel at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle averted what could have been a bloody clash between some traders and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Task Force. The traders, who were armed with sticks and stones, were displeased with the manner their colleague, identified as Taller, was mercilessly beaten by the AMA Task Force, for selling mobile phones at an unauthorised area. But for the few policemen and some on-lookers who managed to cool the tempers of the irate traders, a severe clash would have erupted between them and the Task Force who were also armed with machetes, shovels, and other weapons. When the Times got to the scene, Taller had blood oozing from the severe injuries he sustained on his head from the beatings he received from the Task Force. An eyewitness told the Times that the Task Force, after seiziilg the victim's wares, pounced on him and beat him up. “After seizing Taller's mobile phones, they slapped him for no apparent reason. When he tried to protest, they hit his head with shovels and other weapons as if they had caught a thief,” he lamented. The eyewitness said the Task Force often maltreated the traders after seizing their wares and pleaded with government to check the way the AMA operated. One of the irate traders also alleged that the Task Force extorted monies from them and issued tickets to them as permits to sell on the pavements only for them to return later and seize their goods. “They take monies from us to sell here and later come back to seize our goods for selling at unauthorized places. When we complain, they beat us and threaten to take us to court. This is so unfair,” he stressed. Attempts to speak to some of the personnel of the AMA Task Force, proved futile.
