The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, Dr. K.K. Manfo has urged the public to support the Police Service to provide adequate security nationwide.
Dr. Marfo told Joy News at midday that the Service was in firm control of the security situation in the country, however inadequate numbers in the police force makes it difficult for adequate cover of the entire nation.
He has therefore urged communities to support the police with the formation of community watch committees to curb crime and other nefarious activities.
There has been growing public apprehension over security of lives and property, following the spate of cold-blooded murders of some five people over the past three months by unidentified assailants, as well as the alleged police and military brutalities across the country that have led to some deaths.
Although police statistics indicate a decline in the crime rate, residents in various parts of the country say they do not feel safe, and have been quick to categorise the murders, in most cases, as contract killing.
Dr. Manfo told Joy News that while the police administration is appalled by the killings, it was equally unhappy with the vague categorization of the killings because it leads to misinformation and unnecessary tension in the society.
Speaking with Joy News Matilda Asante, Dr. Manfo said the police had made a lot of progress, including the arrest of many key suspects in their investigations into the recent killings and had been careful not to release names or clues so as not to frustrate their work.
He said for instance, while the public pointed to contract killers for the blatant murder of the Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Journalists Association, the police have established that he was a victim of armed robbery.
Again he said the police had also made significant progress in the murder cases reported in Accra of Rokko Frimpong, the late Deputy Managing Director of the Ghana Commercial Bank and the late PWD worker Kwartei Quartey at Tema.
Dr. Manfo also pleaded with the public to volunteer information on any suspected criminal or crime to the police for effective policing.
He also said the administration has been sanctioning and prosecuting its members who have been found to go wayward, promising that the Police Service will not shield its members from unbecoming conduct.
