A new private university established in Mankessim in the Central Region has been closed down by police officers from the Vetting and Crime Analysis (VCA) Unit at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters in Accra. The university has been in existence for barely a year. The closure followed a complaint by the National Accreditation Board (NAB) that several warnings to the University College of Jesus of Nazareth to close down had not been heeded. The police said the president of the school, who is also the founder, had failed to heed the warning of the NAB to cease operation since the college was not accredited by the board. The University of Jesus of Nazareth, which was opened about a year ago, offers programmes in Business Administration, Journalism and Nursing. While the first batch of students paid GH¢800 for the two-year duration of their course, the second batch is paying GH¢3000 for a year. It currently has 300 students and aims at bringing good quality education to the people of the Central Region and beyond. However, indications are that the university cannot be one of the best because of the bad conditions under which the students are lectured. When DAILY GUIDE arrived at Jedu, a suburb of Mankessim, nursing students were seen busily writing their end-of-semester examinations in an uncompleted make-shift structure which reminds one of the biblical birth place of Jesus Christ. A few of the students expressed their anger about the closure of the college. The University College of Jesus of Nazareth has a large tent as its lecture hall on a hill at Jedu, with several international flags, and surrounded by a thick forest cover. Even though authorities said they had made moves for accreditation, the university college, as it stands, now may not re-open anytime soon since it does not have adequate structures to complete the accreditation process. Two persons, John Nkrumah, 63, registrar, and John Henry Arthur, Dean of Students, were arrested and later bailed. The two, and the founder and the president of the college, Rev Dr. Alfred G. Amo, may soon face court action if found culpable. Source: Daily Guide/Ghana
