The Police and Customs officials at the Sameye barrier have intercepted a Hyundai passenger bus travelling from Takoradi to Half Assini for carrying Indian hemp.
Mr Kofi Duku Arthur, Western Regional Police Commander, who announced this at a press conference in Sekondi on Friday said the Police arrested Evans Kelvin Dupey, a 34-year-old passenger on the bus for being the owner of the parcels.
He said at 11:45 hours on July 17 this year, the bus was stopped at the barrier for normal check and the officers found the eleven parcels of the hemp neatly wrapped with cello tape.
Mr Arthur said when the driver of the bus was asked who owned the parcels, he pointed at Dupey who was sitting in the front seat, since he was the one who put the parcels into the vehicle.
He said when Dupey who is also a driver was questioned he denied ownership and told the officers that a friend who was sitting in the front seat with him owned them but the friend got down from the vehicle and vanished when it was being searched.
Mr Arthur said when Dupey's hand bag, which he had placed in front of him was searched, the remaining cello tape used in wrapping the parcels was found in the bag.
He said Dupey was accordingly arrested and has since been remanded into Police custody by a Sekondi District Magistrate's Court to re-appear on August 10 this year to enable the Police conduct further investigations
