Police say the fleeing driver of a commercial vehicle popularly known as ‘trotro’ who killed police an officer in the process is still on the run.
Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Afia Tenge said Bonsu Osei’s “mate was later arrested by some members of the public and brought to the police station.”
The vehicle, a Ford Transit bus with registration number GR4880-20 has been impounded and is currently at the Legon Police station.
Narrating what happened, DSP Tenge said at about 9:00 am on Friday, the suspect was driving his trotro with two persons on board from Madina heading towards Bawaleshie along University of Professional Studies, Accra road.
“On reaching a section of the road in front of the Trinity Theological Seminary, he was intercepted by G/SGT Moses Appiah and one other officer of Madina MTTD for soliciting for passengers, unauthorised parking and obstruction of other road users at Madina Zongo junction, where they were being pursued.”
According to her, after Mr Osei was stopped, Sergeant Moses Appiah stood in front of the vehicle and ordered him to come down.
“...without any provocation, the driver became furious and ran his vehicle over the police officer who got trapped under the vehicle. He then dragged the police officer on the ground to a distance about 54.50 metres injuring him severely.”
She said the suspect then fled the scene with his vehicle and later abandoned the vehicle and bolted.
“The police officer who sustained various degrees of injuries was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital for treatment by good Samaritan, but he died shortly on arrival at the hospital. Body of the deceased now deposited at the police hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy,” she added.
