The Techiman Police on Monday shot and killed two men they suspected were part of a four member armed robbery gang, who for a long period eluded the police.
Police explained that they returned fire at the gang who had shot at them whilst escaping in a get-away vehicle.
Two of their accomplices, including a woman, escaped after they abandoned the vehicle at Tanoso, a suburb of Techiman.
The Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Commander, Kwaku Ayesu Opare-Addo, told reporters that the vehicle was believed to have been snatched by the gang from the owner at Bourkrom in Kumasi for operation by the gang.
He said at about 5.30pm on Monday, police had information that four suspicious looking persons had parked their four wheel drive vehicle along the Techiman Nkoranza road.
Mr. Opare-Addo said as the police approached the vehicle, its occupants sped off, and even though police gave them a hot chase, they could not arrest them.
Later that day at about 6.30pm, police had information that the vehicle in question had been sighted parked at a filling station in the town.
Quickly he said, the police moved to the scene but the alleged robbers once again sped off amidst firing of gun shots at the police.
The police returned fire but the gang escaped. The police later found the vehicle at Tanoso and a search on in it revealed bodies of the dead men.
Also retrieved from the vehicle were a locally manufactured pistol, four live cartridges, five mobile phones, an unspecified amount of money, two screw drivers and three wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp (wee).
Meanwhile, the corpses have been deposited at the Sunyani Regional Hospital mortuary.
The Regional Police Commander said the Police suspect that the two escapees sustained gunshot wounds and therefore appealed to all health institutions to report any patient with such wounds to the police.
