The Police say they are still piecing investigations together and may prosecute the deputy Black Stars captain John Painstil even without a formal complaint. Richlove Paintsil who was reportedly assaulted by his husband has vehemently denied the report. Amoah Danquah, a complainant and neighbor to the Paintsil family who was also allegedly assaulted by the Black Stars player for sheltering Richlove Paintsil is also contemplating dropping the case. This has left many wondering whether the police can go ahead to prosecute the Black Stars player given the seeming unwillingness by the witnesses to cooperate. But the Greater Accra police PRO DSP Freeman Tettey told Joy News' Hannah Odame they are likely to go ahead with prosecution after investigations. He said the police will have its own way of prosecuting the case, even with a hostile witness. He dismissed assertions that the police goofed in describing the incident as a stab, instead of an assault on the victim. DSP Tettey said based on the report received from the complainant, Paintsil had in his hand a pocket knife during the attack and with blood oozing from the body of the wife, it was not farfetched to conclude it was a stab. That notwithstanding, he said the police is still investigating the matter and will take appropriate action after it. Meanwhile a gender activist and lawyer, Irene Abotsi Nyahe told Joy News Paintsil’s saga offers a test case for Ghana’s jurisprudence. Citing section 6(1) of the Domestic Violence Act, she said even without a formal complaint, the police can still go ahead with prosecution, adding, the medical report as well as accounts of eye-witnesses should help the police in prosecuting the matter. She said the police must go ahead with the prosecution of the case to set a precedent in the country.
