Five armed robbers were gunned down Friday in a shootout with the police at Agyiringanor, East Legon in Accra.A sixth robber who survived the exchanges is assisting the police in their investigations.Hundreds of curious traders and workers gathered at the Accra Regional Police Command headquarters where the bodies of the 'wasted' robbers were first conveyed before being sent to the police hospital morgue. The armed robbers were displayed under a mango tree at the Regional Police Command for identification since the police believe they might have been involved in other robbery attacks in the same vicinity. The Regional Police Commander, DCOP Rose Bio Atinga, in an interview with Asempa News explained that about 10am Friday morning, the police had a tip off that some suspected armed robbers were planning to attack a house at Agyiringanor, at East Legon. She said the Command deployed police troops to the house and a few minutes after arrival, six well armed robbers entered the house and started firing gunshots.DCOP Atinga said the police engaged the robbers during which five were hit and the sixth was arrested.Asked whether the police have been able to identify the dead, DCOP Bio Atinga said “the police is yet to identify them”.The attempted robbery comes on the heels of reported pockets of armed robberies across the country, the most popular being a robbery on a bus at Kubease where, a passenger Amina Mohammed, alleges that the robbers forced male passengers on a Tamale-bound bus to rape female counterparts. The police say that 'robbery and rape' story cannot be true and are seeking to prosecute Amina. She was on Friday granted bail by the human rights court in Accra.Story: Kwaku Antwi-Otoo/Asempa FM/Ghana
