The Police Administration has ordered that no one be allowed to visit suspects after 6pm in their cells, either to provide them with food or any personal effects.
The Director of Public Affairs at the Police Headquarters, DSP Kwesi Ofori, who disclosed this to Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s "Kokrokoo" Morning show Tuesday, said the directive is to stem cell breaks at police stations across the country.
It would be recalled that over the weekend, 16 suspects, some of them high profile criminals under investigations, escaped from the Community 22 cells in Tema. Luck, however, eluded two of the suspects who were re-arrested when the Ghana Police Serviced mounted a manhunt for them.
14 of the suspects are still on the run.
Sgt. Rockson Baffuor was reportedly dragged into the cell when he opened the locks to serve the ‘hungry’ inmates, and in a Rambo-style, all the inmates escaped on Monday.
Whilst appealing to the public to assist in apprehending the other escapees, DSP Kwesi Ofori called for the introduction of additional personnel to assist Counter Officers, in keeping a good eye on suspects.
“I think just like the Accra Central Police Station, measures should be taken to provide additional guard men to help Counter Police Officers in managing suspects in Police cells,” he said.
Sgt. Baffuor has been placed in police custody, pending further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the cell break.
