The Accra Regional Police Command has warned it will not allow any further breaches of the peace in the Ga state. The warning follows recent tension in Gbese in Accra over the eligibility of the Ga king, Nii Tackie Tawiah III, to perform the traditional rites ahead of the Homowo celebration next Saturday. The Regional Commander, DCOP Douglas Akrofi-Asiedu says his men are on full alert to avert any clashes as a result of the chieftaincy dispute. One of the factions in the Ga state, the Okaija family in James Town says it will not allow the King to perform the traditional rites ahead of the Homowo celebrations. Spokesperson for the side Rojo Mettle Nunoo, insists Nii Tackie Tawiah cannot hold himself out as the King of the Ga state because he is not legally recognized. He has therefore asked the King not to set foot at Gbese to perform any rites to avoid any mayhem. But DCOP Akrofi-Asiedu says he will ensure that the festival comes off without any disturbances. “What we have to do is to maintain peace and order in times of any breach of the peace and for now we shall remain quiet and allow the people to celebrate their festival. Whatever happens the police will be there, so we shall be there. If somebody flouts the laws, definitely the police will go in to arrest.” He says any attempts to prevent the smooth celebration of the Homowo festival must be reported for the appropriate action to be taken, but assured that so far no one has reported any threat to the peace of the Ga State.
