Over 300 protesters are wrangling with the police, insisting they be allowed to disperse after picketing at the Efua Sutherland Children's Park in Accra.

Protesters have accused the police of detaining them from going home.

A hand-holding police wall cordoned off the area preventing protesters from gaining access to the road leading to the Flagstaff House.

Armed to teeth, the anti-protest police men have also made available two water canon vehicles at the venue.

Protesters have, however, accused the police of applying excessive force.

But the Police explained any movement outside the Efua Sutherland Children's Park was not part of the arrangement.

"It is a surprise to us. All of a sudden you are stepping out...which is not part of the arrangement..they are breaching the rules," DSP Freeman Tettey explained to Joy FM's Super Morning Show.

The non-partisan group calling itself Concerned Ghanaians for Responsible Governance (CGRG)  assembled to petition President John Mahama over the worsening economic conditions in the country.

After the police denied their initial plan to gather opposite the Flagstaff House, they agreed with the organisers to assemble miles away at the Efua Sutherland Children's  Park.

Three protesters would also be allowed to walk over to meet the President and present their petition.

But reports reaching Myjoyonline.com indicated the protesters wanted to march to the Flagstaff House before dispatching their delegation to meet the President.

Roads leading out of the park have been cordoned off.

Kofi Bentil of IMANI also told the Super Morning Show the police were "anxious to demonstrate that they have the power...it is a protection of corruption".
