The youth of the four main political parties have re-echoed their commitment towards a peace before and after the elections but have called on political actors to ensure discipline, build trust and take action on the lingering political upheavals. They raised these issues on pm:EXPRESS on Joy News Tuesday on a show that was tailored to broker peace. One of the NDC Communicators, Felix Mawulolo Amegashie believes discipline and trust in the security services would ensure the peace so badly needed in the country, but NPP’s Nana Kofi Oppong Damoah disagreed. According to the young NPP Communicator, it is impossible to build trust in the security agencies when their actions speak differently. He cited the by-elections of Chereponi and Atiwa which witnessed some violence and asked if anybody has yet been prosecuted. He reiterated that the country must show truthful commitment to peace and not just words. “peace must be the result of action but not words by political actors. We need decisive action. Ghana is governed by the principle of rule of law. We are all equal before the law. If one man made a comment on radio to offend the sensibilities of Ghanaians and he was charged with treason, felony genocide; and another man is caught on tape plotting against individuals and political parties and seeking to enlist people into the security forces, the same security forces that Felix wants us to trust must act promptly to investigate and this would build the culture of trust”. The former CPP youth organizer who was also on the show agreed in part but said unemployment was the stumbling block to peace because a hungry man would always be an angry man adding that the material condition of people would always cloud any discussion for peace. “The people who go out to fight, their condition is such that once they are pushed they will fight. The material condition of a people at a time determines whether they would take up arms or not. Again there are unresolved political upheavals over the years. The Atiwa incidence, who can say there wasn’t any criminal case there? Who has been invited to the police to answer any question?” Buttressing his point, Mutala Mohammed said the inability of the state to resolve this political upheaval plus others and thereby render justice, is a catalyst for people to fight because “they would be seeking vengeance and not fight for political reasons. The founding fathers of Ghana fought for justice and not peace and once there is injustice, it would always push people to war”, he concluded. The PNC Youth Organizer on the other hand, said inculcating nationalism into Ghanaians would ensure peace. Abu Ramadan called on Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan, the Electoral Commissioner to restore integrity in the electoral system to put people at ease. “as it is now, the trust of Ghanaians in the electoral system is fragile. Out of 10, I can score the trust 1”. But NDC’s Mawulolo Amegashie still insisted trusting the security agencies would be the best way to ensure peace as well as being disciplined because “no political party has the mandate to arrest anybody for engaging in crime”.
