A Communications Specialist with the University of Cape Coast says the trivialisation of the "won gbo" demonstration by Power Minister Dr Kwabena Donkor, smacks of a government unconcerned about the plight of the people.
Dr Eric Opoku said even though Government's spokespersons have a right to water down the real effect of Thursday's 'won gbo' demonstration by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) it must be strategic in its response.
Thousands of NPP supporters took to the streets on Thursday to protest the three-year-old power crisis which has crippled all business activities in the country.
Shortly after the demonstration, Power Minister Dr Kwabena Donkor who has been tasked with solving the crisis, appeared to be mocking the protestors.
He described the protest as a good health walk to keep fit.
That reaction has incensed some Ghanaians.
Some of them told Joy News the comments by the minister were in bad taste. Others believe it was an irresponsible comment to be made by a minister.
Speaking to Joy News, the Communications Specialist shared the concerns and sentiments of the angry Ghanaians.
He said a government in power must be able to determine the legitimacy of real issues on the ground which forces people to go onto the streets.
He stated that a situation like 'dumsor' presents a clear danger to the country's democratic dispensation and a government spokesperson reacting to a dumsor demonstration ought to have shown a little circumspection.
Dr Opoku said if a response appears the way Dr Donkor put it, it presents the minister and government as unconcerned of and comical to the plight of the people.
He believed the NDC had a strategy of explaining what it was doing to solve the energy crisis and the Power Minister ought to have stuck to that strategy instead of seeking to mock the demonstration.
He would not berate the NPP for organising a dumsor demonstration, saying any political party would have taken advantage of similar situations.
