President John Dramani Mahama has asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure that the problems that plagued the special voting exercise Tuesday are not repeated in Friday’s polls. Some security officers were unable to exercise their franchise yesterday because they could not locate their names on the electoral list. Speaking at the Asomdwee Park earlier today, President Mahama said the polls should be conducted peacefully. “We prayed that the elections that come two days from now, on Friday, would be done in an atmosphere of peace, patience and tolerance, and that Ghana, once again, will show to the rest of the world that when it really matters, we stand tall as a nation in terms of a democratic credential and rule of law”. The President said he was confident that God’s favour is with Ghana and this year’s election will proceed without incident. The President would later address a rally at the Ghana International Trade Fair Centre in Accra, where his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will wrap up its campaign today. Meanwhile, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will also conclude its campaign today with a rally at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra. NPP Chairman Jake Obetsebi Lamptey has expressed concerns about the complications that arose during yesterday’s special voting exercise. He told Joy News that he hopes that those voters who do get disenfranchised will exercise restraint and not resort to violence. Earlier, NPP presidential candidate Nana Akufo-Addo met with a delegation of election observers from the African Union and ECOWAS. The leader of the delegation, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, said that he has been impressed with the electoral processes so far.
