The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Professor Kwame Karikari, has been appointed to the Board of Ghana’s leading state-owned print media, the Graphic Communications Group Limited.
His appointment was announced in a statement issued by the National Media Commission (NMC) as part of appointments of new boards of directors for state-owned media organisations.
This was done in consultation with the President John Mahama, the statement noted.
Prof. Karikari has over 40 years of experience in media practice, training, research and publication in Ghana and Africa. He has been involved directly in press freedom advocacy at the national, regional and international levels. He has also served on many other boards, the latest being his appointment to the South Africa Press Freedom Commission in Johannesberg.
Since 1997, the statement said, he has founded and ran West Africa’s biggest and most influential free expression, media rights and development non-governmental organisation, the Media Foundation for West Africa.
"Through the MFWA, he has contributed in diverse ways to advance press freedom, democratic media policy reforms, and media development in Africa".
“We congratulate Prof on his new appointment. We trust that he will bring his years of experience to bear and help advance the cause of Graphic Communications and state-owned media organisations in general,” stated a programme officer of the MFWA, Leslie McDanquah.
Prof Karikari was appointed along with Hajj Mohammed Amir Kpakpo Addo, Mr Ben Assorow and Mr Gerald Ankrah. Other members of the Board include Mr Gideon Quarcoo, Nana Asantewa Afadzinu and Mr Kenneth Ashigbey. Dr Doris Dartey is the Chairperson of the Board.
The appointment of the Board is for a period of two years.
