Discontented mobile phone users embarked on a peaceful march on Thursday in protest of what they say is poor services rendered by the telecom companies in the country.
The protesters carried placards some of which read : “We are tired of low grade services”, “‘azaa’ text promotions”, “Tigo, MTN, Vodafone, Zain, Kasapa the value is the same.”
“I have joined this demonstration because the services the networks have been giving us is very poor,” one of the protestors told Joy FM’s Sammy Darko.
“I just want good services for Ghanaians,” another yelled.
The march was organised by the Consumer Protection Agency, an advocacy group and it was to be preceded by a complete black out on mobile phone usage for six hours across the country.
Surprisingly, some of people who turned up for the march still had their phones on, at least for a period, with the explannation they had to conduct urgent business.
The protestors later sent a petition to the deputy Minister of Communication, Gideon Quarcoo, who assured them of government’s resolve to ensure that the mobile telecom companies provide quality services.
The march was not without incident as two of the protestors were arrested by the police for “misbehaving”, Sammy Darko said.
Organisers of the march were impressed by the bold statement made by the few protestors who turned up for the march.
Meanwhile some of the mobile phone operators say the march was unwarranted.
A corperate services representative of MTN for the Northern Sector Isaac Minoh said operators are doing their best despite teething chalenges.
Corporate Affairs Manager for Vodaphone Isaac Cudjoe said it is unfair for all operators to lumped together and accused of providing poor services.
“It is not all networks that have bad service or bad quality."
