Barely a week left for public basic schools to re-open, the fate of pupils at Mexico One and Two Junior High School in Tema is hanging due to the deteriorating nature of their school building.
The school, which was built in 1962, has developed serious cracks, posing a danger to the lives of the more than 500 pupils and the teaching staff.
The Tema Metropolitan Security Council (MESEC) on Wednesday toured the school to assess the situation and determine how to re-locate the pupils to avert any calamity.
Mr Robert Kempes Ofosuware, Metropolitan Chief Executive who led the MESEC members, said the Council would meet to consider either re-locating the pupils at Aggrey Road School in Community Two, or build a pavilion as a temporary measure to accommodate the children.
Mr Ofosuware explained that a report on a survey conducted by the Geological Survey Department some few years ago on the premises indicated that the school was sited on an earthquake prone area.
He said efforts by the Metropolitan Assembly and the Metropolitan Education Directorate to re-locate the pupils at Aggrey Road School in May 2009 were met with strong demonstration and opposition from the pupils, parents and the community.
He said the MESEC would not fold its arms until a disaster occurred before taking a decision on the fate of the children.
