Some pupils of the Adam-Kyiren Methodist Basic School in the Gomoa district of the Central Region have refused to go to school because they have no desks to sit on, Joy News has discovered.

The pupils explained on a typical school day, they have to sit on the floor to undertake all class-related activities.

According to them, this routine sitting on the floor has left them with all sort of waist and body pains keeping them out of school regularly.

The school, Adam-Kyiren Methodist Basic School was built in 1952 by the government to serve two communities - Adam and Kyiren - in the Gomoa district of the Central Region.

It has for years been the pride of the two communities raising children from the Kindergarten to the primary level.

However, the current condition of the school leaves much to be desired as the structure has shown signs of weary.

Joy News visit to the school, which is 15 minutes’ drive from the Apam junction, revealed the school with a population of 365 pupils, is faced with serious challenges.

Pupils in the primary section have to sit four on a desk which has been designed to take two pupils.

Those who are unable to get a place to sit have had to sit on the floor. This situation has forced some pupils who can afford to bring chairs from their homes to do so.

The situation in the Kindergarten class is no different. With a population of 70 children, the Kindergarten class has only 12 chairs forcing 58 children to sit on the floor. As a result, these children go home very dirty.

The teachers have not been left out since they attend to their work without a chair to sit on once they retire from class.

A teacher who spoke to Myjoyonline's Austin Brako-Powers, disclosed they share the pupils' desks whenever they have to mark scripts.

There is no staff common room for teachers. The only building close to serving as staff common room is this makeshift structure built for them.

The headmistress of the school, Maame Anderson, said she has sent formal report to the district assembly and the district office of the Ghana Education Service (GES)  asking for help without success.

Some parents who also spoke to Joy News expressed worry about the deteriorating condition of the school. They claimed no one has shown interest in addressing the problems of the school.

"Everybody is suffering in the school. The teachers, children and even the headmistress," a parent said adding her daugter has refused to attend school because of the ordeal she is forced endure.

She called on the government to come to the aid of the school since it is the only school in the community.h
