Over 10,000 traders operating at the Kumasi Race Course area in the Ashanti Region have made it clear they will not comply with a June 30 deadline given them by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to vacate the land.
The traders currently occupy the 100 acre land which has been acquired by a South African Company for development.
The KMA wants the traders to leave the place to allow the South African Company construct an estate which will include a shopping mall, a five-star hotel, an amusement park, a hospital and 240 semi-detached executive houses.
However the traders say the KMA has failed to adequately address a resettlement plan supposed to accompany their relocation, a situation which they claim makes it difficult for them to leave.
But Luv FM’s Elton John Brobbey reports that The KMA has refuted these claims stating that alternative markets have been provided for them.
Clement Kegere, spokesperson for the KMA Chief Executive said at a news conference in Kumasi that the June 30 deadline will not be extended.
He said the KMA has already delayed the project due to the occupation by the traders.
Meanwhile a group calling itself the Federation of Race Course Traders Association has kicked against the resettlement plan of the KMA saying areas earmarked for the relocation cannot accommodate the about 10,000 traders.
This allegation has however been debunked by Mr Kegere who insists that his outfit is more than prepared for the resistance from the traders.
