Former President Jerry John Rawlings may campaign for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its Presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama for the 2012 general elections, Spokesperson Kofi Adams has hinted. There have been doubts as to whether the former President, who is rumoured to be a founding member of breakaway National Democratic Party (NDP), will join the NDC’s campaign for the December polls.Jerry Rawlings made a historic appearance at the party’s extraordinary congress in Kumasi to affirm the candidature of President John Dramani Mahama as flagbearer and in a speech, he urged all members to come on board to campaign for the party to win the elections.Kofi Adams speaking on Election Headquarters on Joy FM Friday hinted that, just as it has been with past elections, the former President may join the party’s political process for the elections.“President Rawlings has in all our elections campaigned and I’m sure he will be part of the political process for the 2012 general elections,” he hinted. The Spokesperson indicated that former President Rawlings, however, wants everybody in the party to join the campaign especially those he said “sit in their air-conditioned rooms and offices and some leave the country when it is getting to elections with excuses of health, must all realize that they have benefited from the toil of people. They should also join in, it should not be left on him alone.”Lazy membersDeputy Local Government Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, who said the NDC still loves its founder, agreed with Rawlings’ assertion that some ‘lazy’ members of the party have benefited from the toils of others.According to the Minister, there are some issues that he agrees on with the [former] President stating, “it is time for everybody to hit the road.”He noted that, “part of the reasons why people have been grumbling in the party is that in the past, it appeared as if some of us would do all the work…and then when we win power people will emerge from nowhere.”“Now that we are in power and we are going into a campaign, everybody must lace up his boots and hit the road,” he urged. He was of the view that, although the former President’s presence at the congress did not mean the party’s problems have been solved, he “sees no reason why,” former President Rawlings will not join the party’s campaign for the elections.Nana Konadu was not invitedTouching on wife of Jerry Rawlings, Nana Konadu’s absence at the congress in Kumasi Thursday, Kofi Adams stated that the former First Lady was not invited.According to him, only the founder of the party was invited and if they had wanted the former First Lady to be there, they would have also invited her.“The invitation that the party sent was quite clear that they were inviting the founder to the congress. If they wanted Nana Konadu to be there, in her own right, she should have been invited. She wasn’t invited,” he said.
