Upper West Regional Minister, Ambassador Amin Amidu Sulemani has urged District Chief Executives and officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to ensure that relief items meant for victims of recent floods are dispatched to them.
He said the relief items are not meant for NADMO officials but rather for those whose farms and houses were destroyed and others who were displaced.
Ambassador Sulemani made the statement at Dikpe in the Lawra district of the Upper West Region when he launched the World Food Programme (WFP) support to flood victims and is to be replicated in the other communities that were hit by the floods.
Three thousand and eighty (3082) people were displaced coupled with five (502) hundred and two farms been destroyed.
‘‘I want to make further appeals to not only the WFP but other collaborators. Our initial action here will determine whether people will come to our aid or not.’’
He appealed to the district chief executives in the region to help procure a warehouse in Wa for the world food programme so that in times of emergency they will be able to respond quickly to the needs of the people.
He thanked the WFP for the support given to the victims, saying it will go a long way to ameliorate the sufferings of the people whose farms and houses were destroyed.
The Lawra District Chief Executive, Samson Abu admonished the victims to move away from farming closer to the river banks and also from the low lands to higher grounds in order to prevent future disasters.
The victims were given maize, beans oil and salt.
