The Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Madam Patricia Appeagyei has urged Students’ Representative Councils (SRCs) to resolve issues through dialogue rather than running to the media. She said it was better to direct their grievances and problems to the appropriate authorities instead of using the media especially the radio stations as a way of solving problems, which could inflame passions among students. Madam Appeagyei was speaking at the 10th Anniversary and Residential Congress of the Ashanti Regional Students’ Representative Council (ARSRC) in Kumasi. She criticized the reaction of some students on radio in the country, following the announcement of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) to dissolve Regional SRCs. Mr. Owusu Achiaw, Headmaster of Prempeh College in Kumasi, said the announcement to stop the Regional SRC from functioning was a directive from the National CHASS. The Headmaster who is also the Ashanti Regional Chairman of CHASS, explained that an SRC must be school-based and not a regional body, saying its contributions should be towards the development of the school within which it operates. Mr. Maxwell Kofi Jumah, Deputy Minister of Local Government Rural Development and Environment urged students to take advantage of opportunities offered them by their parents and government to acquire knowledge and skills required for development. Mr. Jonathan Acheampong, outgoing president of the Ashanti Regional SRC, who spoke on the theme: " A decade of Students Activism and Advocacy, A retrospective and Prospective look," called on CHASS to rethink its decision to scrap Regional SRCs since they have helped to reduce the spate of student demonstrations.
