Road Safety Commission has postponed the imposition of a ban on substandard vehicle tyres to next year to enable further stakeholder consultation.
The commission planned to ban the importation of second-hand tyres into the country this month because it argues they increase the risk of road crashes by 30 per cent. The ban is to enforce the provisions in the Road Traffic Regulations which prohibits the use of a tyre that is more than four years old on any vehicle. But communications Manager of the commission, Kwame Atuahene disclosed on JOY NEWS that the ban on substandard vehicle tyres will now take effect in the first quarter of next year.He said they had to defer the plan to next year to consider recommendations made by several stakeholders for effective implementation.Kwame Atuahene noted that the decision was taken after stakeholder consultations - necessitated by concerns raised about the initiative. He added that it has become evident that a lot more consultation would have to be carried out for effective implementation of the ban.
