The Rotary Club of Accra Spintex, Tema Meridian, Tema-Sakumono, Rotaract Club of Regional Maritime together with fishermen of Sakumono organised a clean-up exercise at the Sakumono beach also known as ‘Titanic Beach’.
Over the past six years, these clubs have been cleaning beaches and advocating for these beaches to be kept clean.
Titanic Beach, which is used by fishermen a landing beach and frequented often by beach lovers has been engulfed by filth.
Fishermen complain of getting more rubbish in their fishing net than fish when they cast their nets to fish.
By cleaning the beach, the clubs hope to improve the sanitation situation at the beach and improve the livelihood of the fishermen.
A clean beach also gives the opportunity for beach lovers to enjoy their recreation.
President of Rotary Club of Accra Spintex, Mr Edem Amevordzi, said measures have to be taken to stop people from throwing rubbish into the sea.
He also appealed to the public to join them to continue to clean and keep the beach clean.
The group also donated ten pieces of rakes, brooms and a number of gloves to the fishermen to continue to keep the beach clean.
The core mandate of Rotary International is to bring businesses and professional leaders together to provide humanitarian service and to advance goodwill and peace around the world.
The program was sponsored by Zoomlion Ghana Limited and supported by Decathlon.
