The Saltpond Local Council of Churches, comprising Orthodox, Charismatic and Pentecostal Churches, have set aside the third Thursday of every month to pray for peace before, during and after December elections. At the January meeting which was attended by some leading politicians in the town, Very Reverend Ebo Crentsil, Chairman of the Council and Priest in charge of Saltpond A.M.E. Zion Church, said the council decided to make the prayer meeting a monthly affair so that through it politicians would be reminded of the need to ensure that the peace the nation is enjoying is not disturbed. Mr Stephen Asamoah Boateng, former Minister and MP for Mfantseman West, advised players in politics, majority of who are Christians, to live by the tenets of the principles of Christianity. He reminded them that Christianity abhorred violence, therefore they must desist from introducing violence into politics and appealed to the clergy to put back on track politicians who wanted to foment trouble. He said the 2012 electioneering campaign must be based on issues and not on insults and mudslinging. Mr Aquinas Tawiah Qnansah, a Deputy Minister for Local government and Rural Development and Member of Parliament for Mfantseman West, advised the youth not to allow politicians to lure them into engaging in violence. Politics, he said, was expressing ones views and sharing of ideas and not for fighting and urged leaders of political parties to let the respect they showed to leaders of other political parties whenever they met to trickle down to their followers. Mr Henry Kweku Hayfron, Mfantseman Municipal Chief Executive, appealed to politicians to watch whatever they say because “the tongue is more dangerous than the gun” and that they should not underrate the peace the nation was enjoying. He appealed to pastors who had turned their churches into political platform to be careful about their actions.
