Science parks to augment school laboratories to promote learning

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation says it will establish science parks and innovation centres nationwide to promote learning.

Deputy Sector Minister, Patricia Apiagyei, says the facilities will provide an avenue for the practical study of science related subjects.

“We want them to have a practical understanding of whatever they’re learning. The initiative will make STEM fun for all. We want to create an environment which nurtures the ability of young children and allows them to break bounds in science and Technology,” she explained.

She stakeholders at a two-day science and Technology seminar in Kumasi for females in Basic Schools, the centres will be ready by end of this year.

Madam Appiagyei says the initiative will build children’s problem-solving skills and increase female involvement in Science, Technology, and Engineering and Mathematics.

Senior Research Scientist at Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, Dr. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, entreated teachers to find innovative ways to teach science.

 “The teacher should not make unpleasant statements but rather encourage the students to ask more questions. This will help them to study science to the higher level,” she stressed.

The Science and Technology Seminar series in Kumasi is spearheaded by DANIDA Ghana Alumni Network.

The practical-based seminar seeks to whip up the interest of girls in science as echoes, the network’s treasurer, Lydia Otoo.

“We are using Ayeduase R/C JHS as a pilot. With time, we’ll extend it to other schools. We want to demystify the conception science is the preserve of boys,” she emphasized.
