The Nima Police in collaboration with members of the Copyright Association have arrested six people suspected to have been pirating and selling pornographic and other CD materials in the country.The pirated materials retrieved by the Nima Police during its operation in Accra were mostly Nigerian films and pornographic materials worth over GH¢10,000.The suspects, five Nigerians and one Ghanaian, were apprehended last Friday at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra upon a tip-off.The suspected criminals, according to the police, had been in the pirating business for years, defying frequent appeals and warnings by members of the Copyright Association to individuals to desist from pirating their products as it was destroying their business.The suspects included Innocent Udokwa, 31, Ifeeanyi Green, 33, Richard Eze, 20, Okwudem Nwa Chukwu and Dahamani Kafaru.Briefing pressmen and women at the Nima Police Station in Accra, Assistant Commissioner of Police Angwubutoge Awuni said the police had received several complaints from members of the Copyright Association that most of their works were being pirated and sold at cheaper prices, a practice which was making the owners to run at a loss.He said upon a tip-off, the police together with some members of the Copyright Association stormed different areas at Circle and succeeded in arresting six of the pirates whilst others bolted and left behind their pirated materials.ACP Awuni lamented that reported criminal activities in the country involved lots of Nigerian youth, and pointed out that something needed to be done about it before the situation got out of hand.He gave a strong warning that the police would not sit unconcerned while Nigerians take the peaceful atmosphere in the country for a ride.According to him, Nigerians who are in the country for criminal activities had overridden their innocent compatriots.ACP Awuni therefore appealed to the Nigerian government to have a second and serious look at the actions of its people in Ghana as the security forces would do everything possible to track them down.Source: Daily Guide
