A new reality show, Songs of David Choir reality show, is in the offing with the sole aim of unearthing talents in choral music in Ghana.
Sings of David Choir reality show is a competition designed to showcase and reward the numerous choirs (church, school and community) all over the country as well as discover the lesser known singing groups.
In recent years, the likes of the Winneba Youth choir, Accra Youth Choir, the Commissioned Family, Soul Winners, Tema Youth Choir and many other choirs have entertained and thrilled audiences at many major concerts and events.
This has brought to bare the fact that choirs in Ghana are still looked upon with the general definition of a “chorus that sings as part of a religious ceremony" even though research has shown that there are over 1,000 choirs that operate as an arm of a church or as a commercial group such as Accra Youth Choir, Winneba Youth Choir etc.
It is in this vain that Multi TV and MPWA, a communications outfit, have joined forces to create this pioneering music reality show to unleash the “not so conservative” to their portfolio.
This choir competition is designed to inspire a new breed of inspirational musicians who perform tunes with full components of music. The competition aims at creating an alternative music group (choir) that can perform in churches, and in other secular events; back up performing artistes during concerts and many more.
The beauty and difference between this music competition and existing ones is not in the secular-gospel distinction but rather the message, harmony and complete understanding of music, which "Songs of David" offers.
At the end of the reality show, organisers hope to discover a choir like the Soweto Mass Choir who from their base in South Africa has won numerous awards and the popular Ladysmith Black Mambozo.
After two hugely successful auditions, the Songs of David Choir reality show has selected 15 choirs for the second round of the show.
The list includes: Bi-tonic choir [Greater Accra Region], Prophetic choir [Central Region], Presby Boys Choir [Greater Accra Region], ICGC Strong Tower [Greater Accra Region], Accra Youth Choir [Greater Accra Region], Dansoman Youth Choir [Greater Accra Region], Teshie Youth Choir [Greater Accra Region] and Ajumako Enyam Essiam Youth Choir [Central Region].
The rest are Music Makers [Greater Accra Region], Abeka Union Church Choir [Greater Accra Region], Calvary Methodist Choir [Greater Accra Region], Amammereso Youth Choir [Ashanti Region], Instrufaith [Western Region] St. John Youth Choir [Eastern Region] and Ngleshie Amamfrom SHS [Greater Accra Region].
These 15 choirs will perform at a concert at the Presby Boys secondary school on the 11th of December, 2010; where the show will officially be outdoored.
Out of the 15 choirs chosen from the regional auditions that will perform, only 12 will crossover to participate in the 10 week-long reality show on television.
The Songs of David TV reality show is supported by Joy FM, Adom FM, Hitz FM, Asempa FM, Luv fM, Nhyra FM, Sweet Melodies FM, BUZZ GH Communications and Hi Newspaper.
