Tenants occupying a two-storey building at Sowutuom, a suburb of Accra, are accusing officers of the Ghana Police Service of trying to forcibly eject them from their rooms.
They claim sometimes armed police officers indiscriminately enter their rooms even when they are sleeping and attempt to forcibly eject them.
The armed officers describe the residents as squatters although they are legal tenants.
When contacted the, Director of Estates at the Police Headquarters Superintendent, Joshua Cobson said, the owner of the property, offered them free usage for a year, following which they could go into a proper tenancy arrangement.
But according to him, all that changed once they became aware of the problems surrounding the property.
Avoka fingered
The tenants are also accusing Cletus Avoka, the immediate past Interior Minister as the one who ordered the court case to be struck out.
But Mr Avoka, who spoke to Joy News earlier, has denied knowledge of the issue and says it’s the first time he is hearing of it.
The prosecutor, who was handling the case also declined to comment publicly on the case but denied ever telling any of the tenants that he was being pressured or that Cletus Avoka, Interior Minister at the time, had asked him to strike out the case.
He said rather the tenants stopped pursuing the case, so after their third absence, the judge threw out the case.
