Former Sports Minister Osei Bonsu Amoah has called into question, the competence of technocrats at the Sports ministry and claims they are responsible for the almost stunted growth of sports in the country.
The role of sports directors at the ministry have come under massive scrutiny following growing concerns about the instability of leadership in the sector.
The Directors and personnel at the ministry unlike the ministers stay relatively longer in office and are expected to formulate policies and stick to it through regimes, but MP of Akwapim South, insists the current staff do not have the requisite expertise to ensure policies, if any, are followed through by Sports minister.
"With all due respect as we speak I don't know about any technical person at the ministry.
"During our time we had a Director of sports who was very experienced, Dr Emmanuel Owusu Ansah had run the national sports authority and the Winneba Sports College and was the head of the technical team then"
"They currently have a chief Director alright, but as to whether below him they have technical people who can drive the ministry, I don't seem to have heard any and that is a challenge for us"
The Sports Ministry in six years has seen seven different heads with Dr Mustapha Ahmed taking over from Mahama Ayariga who has been reassigned to the Ministry of Science, Environment and Innovation.
O.B Amoah added the sector’s inability to achieve goals set over the years is hugely a result of lack of policies to follow through due to the frequent changes.
"Every Minister comes with his vision , outlines his plans only to be removed after a few months then we have to start again"
"If you should have seven ministers in six years in that ministry then it's very worrying, even though when you look at health they are also getting their seventh minister and Interior their sixth but for us in sports its worrying because there is still a lot that we need to do".
