The Government of the Republic Ghana has confirmed that Mr. Kone Katinan Justin, a former Ivorian Minister in charge of Budget and Spokesman of former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo has been arrested by Ghanaian security and is being kept in custody here in Ghana.
A statement issued in Accra and signed by Deputy Minister of Information Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the arrest was effected on Friday 24th August, 2012 when Mr. Kone who holds a refugee card from the Ghana Refugee Board which is also recognized by the UNHCR returned to Ghana from South Africa.
The statement signed by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Deputy Information Minister added that Mr. Kone Katinan Justin’s arrest warrant was signed on the 16th of August 2012 by Ivorian authorities.
President John Dramani Mahama in accordance with the Ghanaian Constitution has since asked the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to study the extradition instruments and advice accordingly.
Meanwhile lawyer for Mr. Katinan, Patrick Sogbodjor in an interview with Joy News questioned the basis of his client’s arrest and continual detention. He said government will breach the extradition laws should it hand over Mr. Katinan.
