A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku has called on President John Mahama and his administration to stop the cheap talk of ensuring peaceful elections in December and show by deeds.
Dr. Apraku said the mere talk of ensuring peaceful elections as claimed by President Mahama, is not enough a guarantee that the NDC was committed in helping to run a free, fair, transparent and violence-free elections.
President Mills before his demise, committed to ensuring a peaceful and violence-free polls at the UN General Assembly. His successor, President John Mahama also made a similar pledge on the same platform last month and re-emphasised at IEA’s evening encounter that, he was for peace.
“We are tired of the PR gimmicks of ensuring peace, we need pragmatic measures of ensuring peace,” Dr. Apraku said in reaction to President Mahama’s statement when he (Dr. Apraku) delivered an address at the campaign launch of the New Juaben North branch of the NPP in the Eastern Region.
The former Trade Minister under the erstwhile Kufuor administration noted that the track record of the NDC in supervising elections has been that which is characterized by violence and mayhem.
He recounted attacks visited on the NPP by NDC in Atiwa, Akwatia, Chereponi, Agbogbloshie as well as some polling stations during the recent biometric voters’ registration exercise which he claimed have not been addressed by the police till date.
Dr. Apraku stated that, as a President who is committed to ensuring peace, John Mahama should have met with all the political parties and the Interior Ministry on how to conduct peaceful elections.
“We have two months to elections, you have not called the major opposition parties and the Interior Ministry as well as the Electoral Commission to a meeting and plan how to handle issues in this election, but he is always talking about ensuring peaceful elections. At least we should know that when this person does that, this is what we should do, this party must do this, and this person cannot do this and that,” he said.
He added even though the NPP is for peace, it will not sit unconcerned for the NDC to pretend to be peaceful but “pass under the carpet and perpetrate violence”.
