Over 2,000 stranded Ghanaians in Benghazi, Libya, are said to be feeding on left-overs dumped in dust-bins, for survival. One of them, Mohammed Kamal confirmed this to Joy News in an interview, Thursday. Ghanaians and other black Africans in the troubled North African country are said to be targets of anti-government protesters. The blacks are accused of working as mercenaries for the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi whose 40-year reign is under siege. Over 300 people are reported dead following widespread protests to have Gaddafi step down as demands for political reforms intensify. Foreigners are making frantic efforts to flee the country with Nigeria said to be the latest country to have put an evacuation plan to get their natives back home. The Ghanaians in Libya have made several SOS calls to the Ghana government for repatriation but Ghana's Foreign Minister, Mohammed Mumuni has maintained they are not in any imminent danger. Mohammed Kamal told Joy News they are living in fear and hiding from the anti-government protesters as well as government security forces. They sneak out at night to dustbins for bread and other crumbs, he claimed. According to him, they were shot at a few days ago in a taxi but managed to escape. He said several efforts to contact the Ghana Embassy in Libya have proven futile. Minority Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs Shirley Ayorkor Botchway says she is filing an urgent question in Parliament to inquire what the Ghana government is doing to rescue its stranded natives. “It’s about time that we started doing something as a country to bring back Ghanaians. Some of them have called to say that they have been barricaded in their rooms; they can’t go out because of fear of attack,” she told Joy News. “It’s so clear they are in danger, we need to know what the ministry and government is doing to bring them back,” she added.
