The La District Police has conducted a thorough search of its three cubicles which serve as cells at the station to flush out anything dangerous which can be used by the inmates to harm themselves intentionally.
This follows an attempt by a suspect, last Tuesday to commit suicide while in custody when he broke the toilet seat and attempted to slash his throat with a piece of it.
The one hour exercise which was headed by the La District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Yao Tettegah, led to the discovery of some implements in the cells.
The implements included broken pieces of the water closet seats, few sharp metals, empty can of a soft drink, and smaller pieces of broken wood.
Briefing the Ghanaian Times later, DSP Tettegah said he had put some measures in place to ensure the safety of inmates by asking the station officers behind the counter to be extra vigilant whenever people come to visit the inmates.
"Additionally, an officer will be on standby to check every food that goes into the cells to ensure that nothing dangerous is smuggled into the cells to facilitate any diabolical act," he stressed.
DSP Tettegah said "we are making progress in arresting the car-snatchers in town since another arrest was made at the weekend," and asked the public to volunteer information on the activities of gangsters to ensure that the city did not serve as a safe haven for thieves.
Last Tuesday, an arrested member of a car snatching gang, Adom Solomon, 23, attempted suicide while in custody.
He broke the ceramic cover of the water closet and using a piece of it attempted to slash his throat.
His shouts in the lavatory attracted the attention of his cell mates who alerted the police and he was taken to the Police Hospital where he is said to be responding to treatment.
