A security man from Kruger Brent Services who allegedly conspired with four employees of Areeba to steal earth cables valued at GH¢25,000 (¢250 million) has been arrested. The five, including three security officers of Areeba, were on duty the day the items got missing so they were arrested by officials of the company and handed over to the police to assist in investigations. They are Isaac Bio, 24, a Kruger Brent security man; Nii Lantey Lamptey, 28, Theophilus Ademena, 38, and Moses Amable, 32, all security men and employees of Areeba, as well as Jacob Lartey, a technician, also an employee of Areeba, and Yaw Oppong, 25, a dealer in electrical parts. According to the Accra Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Boi-bi-Boi, on July 17, 2007, the Safe and Security Manager of Areeba went to report the theft of two drums of earth cables from the company's stock house on the Graphic Road. He said the manager suspected the private security man and two internal security men who were on duty that day so they were picked to the police station for questioning. They all denied any knowledge of the theft but were detained for further investigations. Chief Superintendent Boi-Bi-Boi said a witness, who had been contacted by Nii Lantey to convey the cables from the stock house to Opera Square in Accra but had refused, went to the police to challenge the three. He said at that stage Nii Lantey broke down and confessed that he, together with Moses, Isaac, Jacob and Tetteh, who is at large, had conspired on Saturday, July 14, 2007 to steal the cables. The Crime Officer said they sold the items to Oppong, who sells electrical appliances at the Opera Square and so he was arrested. Some of the items were retrieved from him. In a related development, a 24-year-old man suspected to be an armed robber has been arrested at his hideout at Avenor. When his room was searched, two locally-made pistols and 21 rounds of ammunition were found. The suspect, Augustine Osei, with three other accomplices at large, attacked a complainant and his friend on the Avenor Bridge with machetes and locally made pistols last Friday and bolted with a mobile phone, boots and GH¢28 (¢280,OOO).
