Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has criticised suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo for publicly commenting on her ongoing removal process, arguing that constitutional procedures of such nature should not be subjected to public debate or sympathy.
The Chief Justice recently broke her silence on the matter, expressing concern over alleged constitutional breaches and irregularities in the process being pursued under Article 146 of the Constitution.
Her comments marked her first public engagement since the petition for her removal was initiated.
Reacting in an interview with Citi FM on Tuesday, 25 June, Ansa-Asare described Justice Torkornoo’s public appeal as misguided and unnecessary.
He argued that once the constitutional mechanism had been triggered, it was important for the process to run its full course, rather than inviting the court of public opinion to interfere.
“Ghanaians wanted to support her to go all in, and then at the end of the process, everyone will see whether the process was transparent,” Ansa-Asare stated.
“She has done more than 50% and now she is saying that the process was skewed, but she cannot resign — I realised that I have got to a corner, a place of no return, so public here I come for you to hear my side.”
He concluded that the Chief Justice’s decision to involve the public was inappropriate and could undermine the integrity of the constitutional process.
“See what the president is doing to me, and if I appear before the committee, you will see what they are doing — It is none of our business to bring the public into this controversy,” he added.
