Tema and surrounding communities have for the past four days, been hit by an acute water shortage following bursting of a pipeline on the Kpong-Tema water supply system. The situation has forced residents to go roaming all over looking for water from unhygienic sources, including gutters underground reservoirs and streams for household chores like washing and bathing. Some of the water sources sighted by the Ghanaian Times were polluted to the extent that users of such water are certainly compromising their health. Among such places are the sewage valve near the Republic Road Roundabout at Community Four, and an underground reservoir near the Tema Senior High School. Nana Barima Banieh, Tema Area Communication Manager of the Ghana Water Company, when contacted said the Kpong area suffered power fluctuations last Thursday which affected water supply, but engineers from Ghana Grid Company GRIDCo were called in to stabilise the situation. He said when pumping of water resumed after the stabilisation of the power, part of the 42 inch diameter steel pipe carrying water from Kpong to Tema and surrounding areas, burst. Nana Banieh said the burst section was welded on Friday for water supply to resume, but it burst again on Saturday morning adding that the company's engineers were immediately mobilised to work on it from that Saturday through to Sunday. He added that engineers from the company continued through Saturday and Sunday to work on the pipe. At the time of going to press, repair works were said to have been completed and pumping of water resumed but supply was yet to reach Tema as some residents continued to fetch water from unhygienic sources.
