Government has indicated that temporary shelters being built at Adjen Kotoku and Pokuase for the displaced residents of Sodom and Gomorrah will be ready Friday, June 26, 2015.
This was disclosed by the Deputy Water Resources, Works and Housing Minister Samson Ahi.
Some residents of Old Fadama popularly called Sodom and Gomorrah have been sleeping in the open after their structures were demolished last Saturday to make way for the dredging of the Korle Lagoon.
Joy News’ Derrick Ekow Sam was in the area last night and reports that the residents slept on mattresses and planks of wood they managed to salvage before the demolition.
The more than 14,000 residents have had to sleep in turns due to the unavailability of beddings and shelter.
Some residents who spoke to Ekow Sam said they have no other option than to sleep in the open.
A visit to Adjen Kotoku - a site where government intends to build temporary structures for the displaced residents – by Joy News’ Latiff Iddrisu this morning indicates that no temporary shelters have been put up yet.
“There is no development as far as temporary structures [for the displaced residents] is concerned”, Latiff said.
Chief of Staff of the traditional area, Nii Dodoo II said no arrangement between government and the members of the traditional council for the construction of the temporary shelters has been made.
Latiff also found out that some market stalls constructed between 2009 and 2010 have been locked up because traditional leaders have taken government to court over its failure to pay compensation for the land.
However, Deputy Water Resources, Works and Housing Minister Samson Ahi says shelters which are to be built at Adjen Kotoku and Pokuase will be ready for these displaced persons tomorrow.
Meanwhile, a former Works and Housing Minister in the Kufuor administration Boniface Siddique says government ought to have followed the plans on the relocation put in place by the previous government.
