Robert Kpodoh emerged as the overall winner at the maiden edition of the Interplast Masters Tennis Series.The Upcoming tennis star took home a cash prize of 5000 dollars after a two set victory over an aggressive under-card George Darko by a 6-4, 6-1 score at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday.
Kpodo began well with some delightful heavy serves to bag a lead. Darko depended on his power serves and desire to come back from to level matters and went on to win the next two serves, to a tie of break 3-1.
Kpodo continued his persistence in the game to wrap the first set 6-4 score. Darko’s performance had surprised all and sundry present to astonishingly layed back miserably in the second set only to score a point with the eventual winner running away with a 6-1 win.
Robert Kpodoh also lifted the main trophy as part of his prize package whilst George Darko was consoled with 2500 dollars and a trophy. Albert Arthur of the National Sports College in Winneba came third and also took home 1000 dollars whilst Jeff Bagerbaseh won 1000 cedis for placing fourth.
All players who competed in the final Top 16 stage of the Masters series went home with 500 Ghana cedis each.
The three week competition was put together by the Ghana Tennis Association (GTA) and sponsored by Interplast Ghana with the sole aim of promoting the sport in the country.
