Displaced residents of Ketu South Municipality in the Volta Region are appealing to government to relocate them following the destruction of their houses by tidal waves yesterday.

Joy News' Volta Region correspondent Ivy Setordjie reports tens of residents at  Adena, Blekusu, Dzita, Hovi, Denu, Keta and an island called Vuzeme in the Ketu South District had to sleep in the open, with others perching with other relatives because their houses had been inundated by the waves.

The residents have for years been enduring the devastating effects of the tidal waves and last night's torrential rains did not help matters.

The sea overflowed its banks, submerging the houses sited close to the shore, Setordjie indicated.

In 2012 similar disaster struck and left areas like Blekusu Agavedzi destroyed.

The Ketu South Municipal National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO Coordinator, Doe Kornyoh complained about the shortage of relief items to give to the affected victims prompting the then Deputy Finance Minister Fifi Kwetey to intervene.

Two months ago there were reports of another tidal waves, albeit, less destructive with the then Deputy Chief of Staff promising residents that the area will soon get a sea defense wall. Over 250 people were displaced at the time.

It is not clear yet how many people have been displaced in yesterday's disaster.

The residents, according to Setordjie, are asking government to build a sea defence wall as a permanent solution to the problem.

Before that though, the residents say they need to be relocated.
