The police say it will not prosecute University of Ghana students arrested on Saturday for demonstrating because the SRC of the university has signed an undertaking with the police to comply with the Public Order Act. Over a hundred students, mostly from the Commonwealth Hall, were picked up by the Airport Police for massing up at the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange despite a police directive against the action. They were later granted self recognisance bail, but Accra Police Public Relations Officer DSP Freeman Tettey says the students will not be prosecuted. Mr Tettey told Joy News the SRC has also rendered an apology on behalf of the students. He noted that the police had been given prior notice of the students gathering but they were told that the date was inappropriate, but the students disregarded the police directive. “We told them to hold on with their fire,” he said, adding that when the police is ready to give them the adequate security and protection, “we will give them the green light.”
