The much anticipated South African stage musical Africa Umoja is poised to take over the stage of the National Theatre this weekend with four shows scheduled to begin on Saturday May 29 at 4pm and continue at 8pm. The performances will continue on Sunday with the first show also beginning at 4pm and the second at 8pm respectively. The two nights of rich stage musical planned for Ghanaian audiences are expected to be thrilling as the performers chronicle the history of South African music, placing emphasis on the various influences that have contributed to the different kinds of music styles prevalent in every era. The group has received excellent reviews from across world. For instance the South China Morning Post said Africa UMOJA is a " ... well-choreographed dances, excellent footwork and... breathtakingly harmonious acapella numbers. The vocals, especially the solos, were to die for. This pulsating musical odyssey leaves you breathless and your heart pounding for more." The Daily Telegraph, England said "They dance like demons, sing like angels, and drum like magicians possessed." This sentiment echoed by the "Metro", Netherlands that said “... the prolonged applause was entirely justified." One review that stood out came from the Township Talk, South Africa that described UMOJA, considered one South Africa's biggest export, as "I had never seen anything like UMOJA; whose stunning performance could only be described as indescribable." A sneak peek of what Ghanaians should expect at Africa Umoja The cast of about 40 members is expected to arrive in Ghana Thursday and plans are in place for them to meet with theatre professionals at the National Theatre on Friday to dialogue on ways by which the theatre industry in Ghana can be developed. Africa Umoja is two hours of explosion of song and dance performed by an energetic and creative crew. One can experience them perform in their beautifully designed costumes with each of them in their best of character.
